This circa 1960s old vintage 6 x 9 foot Sarouk wool area rug will soon be classified as semi-antique as it nears the 70 year old mark. This piece was manufactured by the Brinton-Peterboro Carpet Co. which was established in Peterborough, Ontario in 1906 by Brinton and Preen Carpets of Kidderminster, England. Brinton Carpets is one of Great Britains most prominent textile firms, established in 1783.
The Sarouk (Saruk) carpet is, for many, exactly what an oriental rug should be: thick of pile, red of tone, with a vaguely exotic central or repeating pattern of floral sprays. It is something that asserts value and tradition. From about 1920 to 1960 the Sarouk carpet maintained a position high in the carpet hierarchy in America.
